Digital Pedagogy & Scholarship at Bucknell is a team with diverse educational backgrounds and interests. Among our team members are Ph.Ds, a GIS practitioner for a nonprofit, an illustrator, and an expert in citizen science. Digital Pedagogy & Scholarship is part of Library Services and housed on the top floor of Bertrand Library, the heart of academic life on campus.

Crystal Donlan
ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR OF Digital Pedagogy & Scholarship
Crystal Donlan is the Associate Director of Digital Pedagogy and Scholarship at Bucknell University, where she supports innovative, human-centered approaches to teaching, learning, and scholarly practice. A learning scientist, educator, instructional designer, and faculty developer with more than 20 years of experience, she has taught and designed learning experiences across K–12, correctional, community-based, and higher education environments. She holds an M.Ed. in Learning Design and Technology and is a doctoral candidate in Lifelong Learning and Adult Education at Penn State University.
Crystal’s scholarship and professional practice center on adult and online learning, digital pedagogy, faculty development, and the evolving literacies required for meaningful participation in contemporary learning environments. Her work explores the intersections of information, digital, media, and AI literacy, with particular attention to designing learning experiences that foster learner agency, competence, reflection, and connection.
In 2021, Crystal introduced her original Mindful Scaffolding framework at the National Institute for Staff and Organizational Development (NISOD) conference. The framework brings together principles of adult learning, compassionate integrity, universal design, reflective practice, and equitable opportunity to create learning environments that are both rigorous and responsive to the needs of diverse learners. Her ongoing doctoral research extends this work by examining human-centered approaches to scaffolding adult and online learning and their potential to reduce transactional distance while strengthening learner competence and engagement.
Prior to joining Bucknell, Crystal developed Teaching the Adult Learner, a professional development course for Penn State’s Online Faculty Development portfolio designed to help faculty more intentionally recognize and respond to the experiences, motivations, responsibilities, and strengths adult learners bring to online education. She has presented locally and nationally on adult learning, digital pedagogy, inclusive course design, and what she describes as “nurturing AI”—an approach to artificial intelligence that emphasizes human agency, reflective practice, ethical engagement, and the thoughtful integration of emerging technologies into teaching and scholarly workflows.
Crystal also writes about the changing landscape of teaching, learning, and academic work. Her recent publications explore sustainable academic workflows and the use of generative AI as a reflective partner in faculty practice, extending her broader interest in how emerging technologies can augment rather than diminish the deeply human dimensions of education. A teacher at heart, Crystal also writes about infusing compassion and empathy into learning experiences across modalities, reflecting her philosophy of being a “waymaker” for educational equity rather than a gatekeeper to opportunity.
A certified secondary English educator, National Geographic Certified Educator, and Quality Matters–certified Higher Education Peer Reviewer and Institutional Coordinator, Crystal brings both practitioner and scholarly perspectives to her work. Across her teaching, research, writing, and leadership, she is committed to creating educational ecosystems in which technology serves human learning rather than defining it—and in which faculty, students, and the broader community of learners are empowered not simply to navigate change, but to shape it thoughtfully.
Leslie Harris
Digital pedagogy & Scholarship Specialist
Leslie began his professional career as an assistant professor of English at Susquehanna University, specializing in computers and writing and in “humanities computing” (now more commonly referred to as the “digital humanities”). After three years as an assistant professor, he changed careers, becoming the Instructional Technology Coordinator at Plattsburgh State University of New York. Since that time, he served as Decker Chair of Instructional Technology at Goucher College, as the Coordinator of the Technology Across the Curriculum Program at George Mason University, and as an instructional technologist at the University of Scranton, before arriving at Bucknell in March 2006. Leslie has a B.A. in English from Yale University and a Ph.D. (also in English) from the University of California, Berkeley.

Janine Glathar
Digital Pedagogy & Scholarship Specialist for GIS
Janine Glathar joined Digital Pedagogy & Scholarship in 2009 to fill the newly-created role of GIS Specialist at Bucknell. She has worked in the field of geospatial technologies for more than 20 years as research specialist, technical analyst and software trainer. Prior to joining L&IT at Bucknell, Janine spent seven years doing applied GIS research in Philadelphia’s non-profit social services sector as the GIS Senior Analyst for Philadelphia Safe & Sound and the Greater Philadelphia Urban Affairs Coalition. Before transitioning to the social services research world, Janine worked for the GIS software company ESRI as a trainer and education/non-profit coordinator. She earned a B.A. in European History and Russian Language/Literature at the University of Pennsylvania. If you ask Janine where she’s from, she’ll tell you she’s a Navy brat and will probably offer to show you a map of all of the various places she’s lived over the years.

Mary Broussard
Digital PEDAGOGY & sCHOLARSHIP SPECIALIST
Mary joined Bucknell in 2022 as the Arts & Humanities Librarian and transitioned to DP&S in 2026. She has a B.A. in French and German, master’s degrees in library science and instructional design and technology, and certificates and certifications in digital accessibility.
She has 15 years of experience as a web librarian and is a facilitator for the Association of College & Research Library’s (ACRL’s) Immersion program, delivering intensive professional development for instruction librarians. She has published widely on topics related to library pedagogy, technology, workplace wellness, and disability.

Wes Bernstein
INTERIM DIRECTOR FOR Digital Pedagogy & Scholarship – & MULTIMEDIA Specialist
Wes served as the Digital Media Specialist at Messiah University and as an adjunct instructor in Communications for over eight years. While at Messiah he worked with students, faculty and administrators developing media projects and providing instruction for the campus and community. Wes earned his B.S. from Temple University with dual concentrations in Film and Media Arts and Creative Writing. He earned his M.S. in Communications from Shippensburg University with a specialization in Digital Media.
Wes also works as a freelance media producer specializing in video production for non-profits and has worked with organizations like the Pennsylvania Coalition Against Domestic Violence, American Lung Association, Tri-County Community Action center of Harrisburg, PA and the Pennsylvania Legal Aid Network.
