Campus Partners: Teaching and Learning Center

The Bucknell University Transformative Teaching Space, located on the third floor of Bertrand Library, is a newly redesigned and renovated area created to foster dynamic and collaborative learning, teaching, and workshop experiences. This project transformed underutilized faculty carrels and central space (Bertrand 339) into a vibrant, student-centered environment.
The primary goal of this renovation was to expand the library’s capacity for high-impact programming offered by Library & Information Technology (L&IT) and the Teaching & Learning Center (TLC). This includes workshops, faculty development programs, and learning communities.
Key Benefits and Features:
- Hybrid-Ready Technology: The space was designed with intentional integration of technology to support both in-person and remote participants, addressing a common challenge on campus where hybrid capabilities were often retrofitted.
- Flexible and Collaborative Environment: The updated common area provides a lively, high-use space for a wide range of L&IT and TLC programming, fostering faculty pedagogical innovation and collaborative endeavors. When not reserved, it remains an open and flexible space accessible to other campus partners and students.
- Enhanced Student and Faculty Support: The project included creating additional offices for student-facing TLC staff, further centralizing academic support services within the library. This placement amplifies the library’s role in campus academics and encourages more student engagement.
- Inclusive Design: The renovation prioritized inclusive design principles—cognitive, physical, and cultural—to ensure the space is welcoming and accessible to all members of the university community.
- Centralized Student and Partner Hub: The space offers a centralized convening area for students, their organizations, and group coursework, equipped with technology to facilitate effective teamwork.
This transformative space reinforces the library’s commitment to supporting innovative teaching, learning, and collaboration across the Bucknell campus.
